The hardest part of making a change in your life is making the decision to start. If you’re reading this, I’m going to guess that you’ve had enough of the chaos in your home. You’re craving calmness and clarity in your space, but inaction has a hold on you.
This is because committing to making a change and taking that first step takes the most will power. But once you get your momentum going, letting go of things gets easier. Your efforts snowball and you will start to see and feel the difference in your every day.
Want to jump-start your decluttering? Here are some simple tips for getting started today. Plus a FREE worksheet at the end of the page!
Create a plan.
I’m a huge fan of all things planning. Jotting down goals regularly and writing daily To-Do Lists are my secret weapons. Creating a decluttering plan will give you the assurance that you can do this and the energy and motivation you need to get the ball rolling. Need help with your jump-start plan? I’ve included a free worksheet at the bottom of this post to help you out!
Set up a donation box.
I’m all about making things simple and easy. To remind yourself to be mindful of your possessions, set up a donation box somewhere noticeable in your home. Throughout your day, whenever you come across something that doesn’t bring you joy, place it in the donation box. Once the box is full, donate its contents and start over!
Get rid of five things.
Look around the room you’re in. Find 5 things you can get rid of right now and put them in your donation box. Don’t overthink it and you’ll be surprised how easy this can be.
One item in, one item out!
Even after you’ve decluttered your entire home, if you continue to accumulate more things, your home will soon get cluttered once again. Here’s a simple rule I like to follow: every time you bring a new item into your home, donate or throw out one item. One item in, one item out!
Share your decluttering goals.
Making your plans public will give you a push to get your journey going and help keep you accountable. Take a minute to tell a friend about your plans and see if they will join you as an accountability partner. If not, share your plans on social media and follow others with similar goals. What better way to get something done than to make a game of it. Find inspiration from others who share your goals and join the game that has you removing things from your home little by little everyday. Search the hashtag #minsgame on Instagram.
